Coffy x COUTUREBOY
Coffy Galerie and COUTUREBOY teamed up to explore a shared inquiry: the Black male as both a cultural subject and a constructed form.
Where Coffy Galerie investigates how images produce meaning, COUTUREBOY extends that inquiry into garments, photography, and design, treating the body not only as a subject but also as a structure of collective meanings. Meanings that embody beauty, interiority, tenderness, sensuality, and desire without justification.
COUTUREBOY lives in two worlds simultaneously: quiet glamour and desire. Both converge on the language of advertising. The project imitates its look, appropriates its content, simulates its composition, and adopts its distribution methods, deliberately collapsing the division between art and commerce until the distinction no longer holds.
This is not a critique from a distance. It is full immersion: using the tools of the image economy to examine what that economy does to the body, to beauty, and to desire.
The result is a body of work that functions as both a commercial object and a cultural inquiry, garments and images that reward looking, invite interpretation, and accumulate meaning over time.
The project was successfully exhibited at - The Makeable Mind, Noorderlicht International Photography Festival 2021, Groningen, Netherlands
